7 Signs a Toxic Relationship Is Changing You

Oct 29, 2026

One of the saddest things I've seen is a good man who doesn't even recognize himself anymore.

He used to be confident.

He laughed more. Had friends. Pursued goals. Trusted his own decisions.

But after years of conflict, criticism, and emotional manipulation, something changed.

Now he's anxious, constantly second-guessing himself, and afraid to speak his mind.

And the worst part? He doesn't even realize how much the relationship has changed him.

Here are 7 warning signs a toxic relationship may be taking a toll on you:

  1. You don't trust yourself anymore. You question decisions you used to make confidently.

  2. You're constantly walking on eggshells. Your peace depends on her mood.

  3. You apologize just to avoid arguments. Even when you haven't done anything wrong.

  4. You've lost interest in things you used to love. Friends, hobbies, goals, and passions have taken a back seat.

  5. You're becoming angry or emotionally numb. You barely recognize your own reactions anymore.

  6. You feel guilty for having boundaries. Saying no makes you feel selfish.

  7. You've lost your sense of identity. Somewhere along the way, you stopped being yourself and started living to keep someone else happy.

Brother, if several of these sound familiar, pay attention.

They don't automatically mean your wife is a narcissist, but repeated emotional abuse and controlling behavior can take a serious toll on your confidence and well-being.

HERE'S WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO THIS WEEK.

Stop spending all your energy trying to figure out why she acts the way she does.

Instead, start asking yourself three questions:

  • What unhealthy patterns keep repeating in my relationship?

  • What parts of myself have I given up just to keep the peace?

  • What's one small thing I can do this week to start rebuilding my confidence?

Maybe that's calling an old friend.

Getting back in the gym.

Setting a healthy boundary when it's safe to do so.

Or talking with someone you trust about what you're experiencing.

You don't have to change your entire life overnight. But you can start taking small steps toward becoming the man you want to be again.

And that's exactly why I created The Narc Free Man Academy: The Clarity to Confidence System.

It's my video training program designed to help men recognize unhealthy relationship patterns, stop constantly second-guessing themselves, rebuild their confidence, and create a clear plan for their future.

Because, brother, you've spent enough time trying to figure her out. It's time to start rebuilding YOU.

Stay strong,

Phillip

P.S. If you're tired of walking on eggshells, questioning yourself, and feeling like you've lost the man you used to be, I created something specifically for you.

Inside The Narc Free Man Academy, I'll walk you through my six-week Clarity to Confidence System, with practical lessons, workbooks, boundary-setting tools, and action plans to help you move forward.

What 20+ men told me they need most right now
Yesterday, I asked men in this community a simple question: If I created a small, private coaching group for men navigating toxic, narcissistic, high-conflict relationships, separation, or divorce… what would you actually need for it to be worth joining? The answers were incredibly clear. Men told me things like: “I need a structured plan.” “I want tangible actions I can take between sessions.”...

What if becoming more disciplined doesn’t require changing your entire life? In the newest episode of the Narc Free Man Podcast, I sit down with retired Navy SEAL officer JJ Parma to talk about discipline, purpose, failure, and rebuilding your life. One of my biggest takeaways from JJ: Stop trying to change everything at once. Pick one thing. Make one small promise to yourself. Keep it. Repea...
